Driving down Poplar last week I noticed that the new Memphis Donuts was open. Team Oster loves donuts, so we wasted little time checking it out.

I told Satchel (age 10) to look excited.

I love the sign.

I'll admit that I was kind of hoping it was going to be a donut shop like you hear about in Seattle. You know, the kind that sells donuts shaped like voodoo dolls.

Rather, it's a typical donut place, not too different from Donald's or the Donut Man. There are several kinds of donuts, biscuits, croissants, and kolaches (however they actually call them pigs in a blanket). The donuts are behind the counter, like at Dunkin Donuts, so you don't get to fog up the window drooling at them.

The interior is freshly painted and fairly nondescript. What it lacks in charm, it makes up for in cleanliness. Most donut shops in town are pretty grody, so this is fine by me. Seriously, even the bathroom is clean.

Ok back to the fare. They have a nice drink selection, including iced coffee (woot!).

Don't worry, there's hot coffee too.

Satchel, who has decided that he doesn't like sugar, ordered an egg and bacon biscuit. He happily snarfed it down.

Oddly enough, Satchel pointed out that there was a teeny tiny piece of broccoli on his biscuit. I said something like, "Oh, no," and he replied, "No, that's good!" Weirdo.

Jiro, our biggest donut fan, ordered THREE donuts--a blueberry glazed, a cake donut, and a regular glazed. (He argued that the blueberry would be for later. Yeah, right.) They were super fresh and delish.

This very happy camper declared his "the.best.glazed.ever." He went on to say they were worthy of selling at Amazing Glazed, the fictional donut shop in his favorite book.

And now, for the ultimate test--Warren Oster, former donut maker. He ordered a chocolate old fashioned, which they actually call buttermilk cake.

He said it was really, really good.

Typically I do not indulge when we go out for donuts, but I couldn't resist. I got a lemon filled chocolate glazed. YUM. As Jiro would say, "It was TOO good."

We all gave Memphis Donuts the thumbs up, and will definitely be back for the super friendly service and fresh & yummy donuts.

p.s. We rode the trolley a few days ago and spotted a donut shop on Main Street. Whodoo Donuts, I think. Anybody know about that place?
